Researchers are now turning to artificial intelligence to enhance mosquito surveillance. By developing smart, AI-enabled mosquito traps, they aim to automatically identify mosquitoes that carry diseases such as Zika, malaria, and dengue. This technology could assist health officials in more effectively tracking and preventing potential infestations, offering new hope in the fight against these illnesses.

Murphy Cabreros has come to this shop with a mission. Protect her family from mosquitoes. As an inhabitant of the Philippines' capital city Manila, Cabreros lives in an area where dengue fever, a mosquito-borne disease, is widespread. After surviving the illness, Cabreros has installed a strict routine to protect her children from mosquito bites. In the evening, at four or five o'clock in the evening, I prepare spray, bug spray, at the whole house and when I light the coil, yeah, all around my house to prevent the mosquito. Avoiding getting bitten by infected mosquitoes is an arduous task. It's why researchers are trying a new method. With an artificial intelligence tool, they are hoping to make it easier for health officials to track disease-carrying mosquitoes and prevent infestations. So the inspiration for our smart AI-enabled mosquito trap is because surveillance of mosquitoes today is a purely manual process. Traps are laid, thousands of mosquitoes are being collected, most of them are thrown away and only a very small few are basically looked at. And if there is a disease-carrying mosquito there, then, you know, the public health officials keep track of that. But this process is very painful, very time-consuming and very inefficient. And you know, given the advancements in AI, we decided that we can come up with a smart AI-enabled mosquito trap that can trap mosquitoes, use AI to automatically identify the disease-spreading ones, whether it's Zika, malaria, dengue, et cetera. While living with mosquitoes remains inevitable, solutions like these give hope in the fight against the deadly diseases the insects carry.
