Recent data indicates a modest uptick in consumer confidence, according to the Consumer Confidence Index. While consumers are feeling slightly more positive overall, the improvement is largely driven by increased optimism about the economic outlook for the next six months.

Current sentiment about the labor market has declined, with more people reporting difficulty finding jobs and fewer job openings. These trends are being closely watched by the Federal Reserve as it prepares for its policy meeting, where no major changes are expected.

Consumer confidence inched up in July, new data shows

Here's a live look at the big board stocks and Stockholm. The headline is Wall Street awaits word out of trade talks between the United States and China in Stockholm right now. So investors really hope to see a resolution in an escalating trade war between the world's two largest economies. That's a big deal meeting and so is this one. The Fed's meeting for two days weighing the state of our economy and the question about whether to reduce interest rates. So we're gonna get to that in a moment, but first new numbers just in this morning. Give us a fresh read on consumer confidence. So let's get to CBS News. Money Watch correspondent, Kelly O'Grady. Kelly, I'm a consumer. Should I be confident if I'm going to be like everybody else? Well, the data says that most consumers are feeling a little bit more confident. So the Consumer Confidence Index, it essentially tracks how people are feeling about the economy, their financial situation, as well as the labor market and inflation trends. And it breaks it up into how people are feeling right now, as well as how people are feeling about things over the next six months. So at the top line level, sort of add all of that together, it ticked up modestly. When you break it apart though, people felt less good about things right now and more positive about things in the future. That's really what boosted the overall look to be more positive. The one thing that I will highlight is that how people feel about the labor market right now was what dragged things down a touch. And that gives me a red flag as we go into that all-important jobs report on Friday. Consumers aren't always right in terms of how they feel and their perception about things, but it does give us anecdotal evidence that people are feeling like there aren't as many openings and that they're having more trouble finding a job if they are out of work. And you mentioned the Federal Reserve. These are all the types of things that they're going to take into account at that all-important decision tomorrow that we are likely going to see no change. I do sound like a broken record, but yet again, no change.
