The particular copy sold has a notable history, having been owned by actor Nicolas Cage, stolen from his home, and later recovered before being auctioned for over $2 million. The recent sale surpasses previous records, including a $9 million auction for Superman's first solo title from 1939.

You're looking at $15 million worth of comic book history. That's the price fetched by a copy of Action Comics No. 1, which sold for 10 cents in 1938, and features the very first appearance of Superman. This is the holy grail of holy grails of comic books. Without this comic book, we may not have any other superheroes. No Batman, no Wonder Woman, no Spider-Man, no X-Men, no Wolverine, no nothing. The anonymous buyer could keep it sealed or leaf through the panels showing Superman's journey to Earth as a baby, his childhood feats of super strength and laser beam eyes, and his decision to use his powers for good. This particular copy has its own unique story. The actor Nicolas Cage bought it for $150,000 in the 90s before it was stolen from his LA mansion. It was found a decade later in an old storage container. Then Cage auctioned it off for more than $2 million. Now it's ballooned in value once again, and the marketplace which sold it says the Nic Cage saga is partly to thank. It was an extremely high-grade copy, very prized, cherished by Nic Cage, sold to him by me, and then in 2000 it was stolen. And I think because of that and the recovery, it probably would be considered the most well-known comic book in the entire world. The private sale blows the last record out the water. In November, Superman's first solo title from 1939 sold at auction for over $9 million.
