To win the artificial intelligence (AI) race, the Trump administration says the U.S. needs to remove regulations, which could mean a loss of federal funding for Colorado.

President Trump has issued executive orders to establish a single federal standard for artificial intelligence regulation, warning that states with their own rules, such as Colorado, could lose federal funding if they do not comply. Colorado's AI Act, which is set to take effect soon, is the first comprehensive AI law in the United States and includes strict consumer protections, such as requiring companies to notify consumers when interacting with AI systems and addressing bias in automated decision-making.

The new federal approach has placed pressure on Colorado lawmakers to reconsider or delay their state law to avoid losing funding. Some businesses have already considered excluding Colorado from certain AI services due to the complexity and cost of compliance. State officials are debating next steps, with discussions of a special legislative session to address both budget and AI regulatory concerns.

And as you heard there, he wants to limit regulation at the state level, something Colorado and only a few other states are already doing. But Colorado's law is different than the others, and it's the only one providing comprehensive consumer protections. Denver 7's Ryan Fish taking a look at the president's new plan and whether it puts state protections at risk. The global AI race is heating up, and to win, the Trump administration says the U.S. needs to remove red tape and regulation, threatening to withhold federal funding from states who don't comply. In my mind, Colorado is by far the most restrictive state as far as AI regulation. We have the Colorado AI Act, the first comprehensive AI law in the nation. Tyler Thompson is an attorney who advises companies on how to comply with that law, set to go into effect in February. It's keeping technology lawyers busy, that's for sure. It aims to protect people from bias when interacting with AI systems making important decisions, like whether someone gets a job, a loan or housing. The law also requires companies and organizations to notify consumers when they're interacting with an AI system. This is not a simple one or two paragraph disclosure. These are very involved, detailed processes, and you need somebody who's a true expert in AI. It can be very expensive, difficult and time consuming for companies to do that right now. Thompson says that's already forcing companies to consider excluding Colorado from some AI services. And with President Trump's new executive orders, state lawmakers are feeling pressured to change or delay the law to keep federal funding. We're just in a free for all right now. They're saying go ahead and discriminate and do whatever you want and don't worry about how the A. I. Is making the decisions. State Representative Brianna to tone sponsored Colorado's law and a reform bill, she says, would have made it easier for businesses to comply with the new rules, but that failed to pass. The goal of kicking a can down the road this far is to just get time in order to, uh, to try to kill the thing altogether. And if we go back to the ground level, it's going to make it harder for any other state to succeed to. We feel a lot of responsibility to try to get this to, uh, a better place to tone worries about companies prioritizing profits over potential A. I. Issues like bias, privacy and deep fakes. There are a lot of things that we can do now to make sure that this doesn't run away from us, or we can just take our chances and roll the dice to tone expects Governor polis to call a special legislative session as soon as next month to address budget issues and the state's A.
