Heavy rain and coastal flooding hit the Northeast with wind gusts near 40 mph. Conditions are improving, though damage and flooding remain in parts of New Jersey and New York.

Heavy rainfall and strong winds from a recent storm have caused notable coastal flooding and wind damage across parts of the northeastern United States, including New Jersey, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and southern Massachusetts. Flooding reached porch level in some areas, with several feet of water reported and numerous roadways affected. Wind gusts reached nearly 40 miles per hour, resulting in downed trees and damage similar to that seen in severe thunderstorms. 

Despite the challenges, the rainfall is expected to help alleviate drought conditions, particularly in New Jersey. Wind speeds and rainfall intensity are now decreasing, signaling an improvement in weather conditions and marking the end of the most severe impacts from the storm.

Taking a look at minutecast, you can see where we do still have the rainfall. And while we didn't really have the stronger winds, we certainly didn't have the coastal inundation further inland, we have had the rainfall and we continue to see that. Very slow moving, really. We're seeing heavy rainfall continuing in Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Southern Massachusetts. And it's been that way since we got on the air just about at 2 p.m. Now, while some of this rainfall is on the heavier side and certainly it doesn't help any areas that are already seeing coastal flooding, this is beneficial. If you think about the drought conditions that we've been talking about, especially somewhere like New Jersey, we'll take whatever rain we can get. So Thursday morning, specifically, we get an update to the drought monitor. That should bring some good news for these areas. Now, the coastal flooding, that's been the highest impact. You're seeing on the right-hand side of your screen, Ship Bottom, New Jersey. I mean, it's right about at porch level, that flooding. Certainly flooding basements of any of these homes, a lot of flooded roadways, obviously. Even getting into that garage, possibly, depending on exactly the situation there. And a lot of these areas, the top reports, three and a half plus inches even in some areas beyond what we typically see at high tide. So several feet of water, which leads to those scenes. But then there's the wind. We saw damage from the wind as well. That's what you're seeing now on the right-hand side of your screen from East Hampton, New York. And it's not just small tree limbs that were down. I mean, that's like half a tree that we're seeing. Very similar to what you would expect from a severe thunderstorm. That's what you can compare the wind gusts to. Now, at this point, our Boston data is working once again. We're at 29 miles per hour as far as current wind gusts. They're 24 in New York. Now, these are starting to come down in the last couple of hours. We were even close to 40 mile per hour wind gusts in some of these same areas. This is a sign. Things are starting to improve. The worst is behind us. Zooming in here, Toms River, still 34 mile per hour gusts, 38 in Atlantic City. Yes, we still have wind as an issue, but the worst is certainly behind us.
