Across the political divide, there's little love for proposed new hate speech and gun laws urgently drafted in the wake of the Bondi terror attack. People have dismissed this legislation that they called for without even reading it. The opposition leaders come out swinging. It doesn't address Islamic extremism. It doesn't address ISIS influence. And it doesn't address the rise of anti-Semitism. The peak body representing Australia's Jewish community is tonight begging the Coalition not to stand in the way of new laws. We mustn't let the perfect become the enemy of the good. Even though there are some negatives in this bill, some shortcomings, there are many other positives and it is therefore worthwhile. The opposition demanded Parliament be recalled, but now says Labor's rushing the process, MPs raising concerns about tighter gun access and the impact on free speech. Wouldn't it be wise if we waited for the Royal Commission to report its findings? That would mean we did nothing for a year. The hypocrisy of what they've been calling for the last four weeks is just really disappointing. The Coalition's scathing criticism has the Federal Government looking elsewhere for support. It puts the Greens in a strong bargaining position, but it'll be an uphill battle to get them over the line. The Greens want other vulnerable groups protected from hatred. It's also concerned about stronger powers to cancel visas. The Greens will not be supporting legislation that scapegoats migrants. This should be a moment of national unity.
