It was a weekend of intense confrontation in Chicago and Portland over  President Trump's federal crackdown on illegal immigration.

Federal agents and protesters clashed in Chicago and Portland as President Trump's administration intensified its immigration enforcement efforts. In Chicago, aggressive tactics were reported, including the use of smoke grenades and tear gas, and a woman was shot by federal agents after allegedly attempting to ram them with her vehicle. The Illinois governor and Chicago's mayor have taken legal and executive actions to resist the federal response, including a lawsuit to block National Guard deployment and the creation of ICE-free zones in the city.

In Portland, similar protests occurred, and attempts to send National Guard troops were blocked by federal court orders, pending appeal. The White House maintains that the actions are intended to ensure public safety, while local leaders argue the measures are exacerbating tensions. The situation remains unresolved as legal challenges continue.

Clashes in U.S. cities over President Trump's immigration crackdown

As we've been talking about, and as was mentioned in that press briefing, it was a weekend of intense confrontation in two major cities over the President's immigration crackdown. Federal agents aggressively pushed back protesters in Portland and Chicago. News of a raid in Chicago where children were separated from parents. The President also took steps to deploy hundreds of National Guard troops to those states where the Democratic Governor said they're not needed. Patrick Terpstra is following all of the developments for us here in Washington. Patrick, that clash between the Trump administration and these cities playing out both on the ground and in court. So tell us more about this. Well, we're talking, Marisa, about Chicago and Portland, Oregon, two Democratic strongholds that are pushing back against ICE immigration enforcement crackdowns that have been ongoing in both of those cities. In Chicago, we saw some pretty aggressive tactics administered by federal agents, including the use of hand grenade smoke tools to try to disperse crowds, as well as tear gas lobbed from vehicles. At the same time, the Trump administration saying that is because protesters have become more aggressive, pointing to a woman that was shot by federal agents over the weekend because they say that she was trying to ram them with her vehicle. She drove herself to the hospital, was not seriously injured, and has since been arrested and put into FBI custody, charged with some serious offenses related to all that. But Illinois' governor has come out to say that all of this by the federal government is simply making things worse. He wants to see them not deploy hundreds of National Guard as they are trying to do. He has announced a lawsuit filed today that would attempt to keep the National Guard out. At the same time, earlier this morning, we heard from Chicago's mayor, Brandon Johnson. He has signed an executive order establishing what he calls ICE-free zones, areas designed to prevent ICE from coming in. Private stores, for example, and local government buildings where ICE would not be welcome. Here's how he described it earlier today. Today we are signing an executive order aimed at reining in this out-of-control administration. The order establishes ICE-free zones. That means that city property and unwilling private businesses will no longer serve as staging grounds for these raids. It'll be interesting to see exactly, well, first of all, whether the Trump administration complies with that executive order. And more importantly, if the administration does not, if ICE goes into one of those ICE-free zones, what happens then? At the same time, over in Portland, Oregon, on the West Coast, also protests over the weekend and attempts to send National Guard troops there from Oregon, California, and Texas. There were two court orders that came down from a Trump appointee on the federal bench. Both of those orders saying that those National Guard cannot be deployed to Portland, Oregon, without the permission of the governor there. That governor Democrat making clear that she does not want the National Guard released there. But that case is now with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. And earlier today, we heard from Caroline Leavitt, a White House spokeswoman, saying this is not about militarizing cities, but more about trying to keep them safe. It's a shame that we see in some cities across the country that their mayors are just simply refusing to cooperate because they don't like Donald Trump. And that's what this boils down to. And I don't think any American would disagree that Chicago needs more law enforcement reinforcements. And after a weekend of very serious clashes between those protesters and the federal agents, neither side backing down in either of those cities, Chicago or Portland. Yeah, now it's up to the courts. We saw one of those judges say that this is a nation of constitutional law, not martial law. We'll see how it plays out. Scripps News investigative correspondent Patrick Terpster live for us.
