Born in Japan to a Canadian father, Deguchi faced a significant decision in 2017 when she chose to represent Canada. Her journey has been long and challenging, but her success has been embraced by both Canadian and Japanese communities. Following her switch, she achieved a bronze medal at the 2018 Judo World Championship, becoming the first Canadian woman to do so. 

Deguchi’s recent win at the Olympics is not only a personal triumph but also a significant moment for judo in Canada. It's her first Olympics and it's been a triumphant one. Krista Deguchi, now Canada's first ever Olympic champion in judo. Canada's first gold medal, how are you feeling? Oh yeah, it is the first gold medal. I wasn't thinking that part. It's been a long journey for me. Deguchi, born and raised in Japan, started her judo career representing that country. With a Canadian father though, she could choose. And in 2017, she made the jump, convinced she'd have more opportunities representing Canada. When I started competing for Canada, I felt, is it okay for me to fight for Canadians? I am half Canadian but my origin is in Japan. Now I feel I'm part of Canada and I'm very grateful that I can fight for Canadians. Her win also being embraced by the Japanese. And this is far from her first win since that fateful switch. In 2018, she won bronze at the Judo World Championship, making her the first Canadian woman to do so. Gold medals soon followed. Now that hardware has also come on the world's biggest stage. Emotions are just pure happiness. I'm very happy to see Krista realize her dream. She's been through a lot. She's been through the ups and downs, so to see her end this long road here with gold medal is just amazing. Deguchi's win is a boost for the sport within Canada, this judo commentator says. So there's a long history of judo performing well but never getting that gold medal. And so for judo, it's always this paranoia, like maybe we'll vanish, maybe we'll disappear, maybe the Olympics will forget about us. But judo won't likely disappear, not after this win.
