China has hit back at claims its state-sponsored hackers breached the U.S. Treasury Department's computer security guardrails this month and stole documents in what Treasury called a "major incident".

China has dismissed accusations from the U.S. Treasury Department that Chinese state-sponsored hackers infiltrated its computer systems. The breach, described as a "major incident" by the Treasury, involved the unauthorized access of departmental workstations and the theft of documents. The department reported that third-party cybersecurity service provider Beyond Trust was compromised, allowing hackers to obtain a crucial key and retrieve unclassified documents.

The incident reportedly took place earlier this month, with the Treasury being notified by Beyond Trust. The Treasury has since been collaborating with the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the FBI to evaluate the extent of the breach. Chinese officials, including Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning, have strongly denied the allegations, branding them as baseless and lacking substantiated evidence.

A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington also refuted any involvement in the hacking incident. Meanwhile, the Treasury Department has not provided additional details concerning the breach following media inquiries.

The U.S. Treasury Department said Chinese state-sponsored hackers broke into its systems in early December, according to a letter to lawmakers obtained by Reuters. The Treasury called the breach a major incident, saying department workstations were remotely accessed and documents were stolen. It said the hackers compromised third-party cybersecurity service provider Beyond Trust, gaining access to a key used by the vendor, and were able to retrieve unclassified documents. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning on Tuesday called the claims groundless and lacking evidence. A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington also rejected any responsibility for the hack. The Treasury Department said it was alerted to the breach by Beyond Trust on December 8, and that it was working with the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, as well as the FBI, to assess the breach's impact. Treasury officials did not immediately respond to an email seeking further details about the hack.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv will do "anything" to advance EU accession talks. Zelenskyy spoke alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, President of the European Council António Costa and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
