UNICEF has issued a warning about the worsening humanitarian crisis in Al-Fashir, Sudan, where children are facing severe malnutrition due to a prolonged siege by rapid support forces. Families are resorting to eating animal fodder as food supplies have run out, and relief aid is largely blocked from entering the city.

The siege has displaced at least 600,000 people, half of whom are children, while an estimated 260,000 civilians remain trapped in desperate conditions. Many who fled have encountered further hardship, including hunger, thirst, and violence. Humanitarian organizations continue to call for urgent intervention, but their appeals have yet to yield results.

We are very tired of random shelling. We are so tired. Life is difficult and getting food is difficult. We can't find anything to eat. Al-Fasher is the last major stronghold of the Sudanese army and its allied factions in the western region of Darfur. But it's been under siege by rapid support forces for a year and a half now. The siege means little if any relief aid is allowed in. But the scope of the suffering stretches across western Sudan. UNICEF issued a stark warning on Wednesday, saying that Al-Fasher has become a hotbed of malnutrition, disease and violence, claiming young lives every day. The statement adds that at least 600,000 people, half of them children, have been displaced from Al-Fasher and the surrounding camps in recent months. Inside the city, an estimated 260,000 civilians, including 130,000 children, remain trapped in desperate conditions. Over the last few months, hundreds of thousands of civilians fled Al-Fasher and the displacement camps around it. But they didn't fare better, with reports of deaths by hunger, thirst or deliberate killings along the desert trails or in new areas of displacement. Repeated calls by humanitarian groups for the world to come to the rescue of the victims and for the warring parties to try to put an end to the conflict are falling on deaf ears.

It's been 13 days since President Trump said he could strike a peace deal in Ukraine, following his meeting with Russia's leader, Vladimir Putin. But Russia shows no signs of backing down, launching an aerial assault on Kyiv.
