The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has been granted permission to use Naval Station Great Lakes, located in the Chicago suburbs, as a staging area for immigration enforcement operations. According to an internal DHS memo, the base will house up to 250 agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol, along with 140 support vehicles. 

This move is part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to utilize military resources in support of immigration enforcement, a practice that has expanded beyond previous administrations. The operation at the naval base is expected to last for several weeks and will not involve detaining individuals at the site, as existing ICE facilities in Chicago will be used for that purpose.

I know where that is. CBS News immigration reporter Camilo Montoya-Galvez has the story and joins us now. Camilo, thank you so much for being with us and bringing this reporting to us. What does this memo detail? Well, the memo we obtained from the Department of Homeland Security shows that the Trump administration asked the Department of Defense to allow Homeland Security officials to use this Naval Station in the Chicago suburbs as a staging area of sorts to launch a major increase in immigration enforcement operations in that area, targeting people who are suspected of being in the country illegally. Homeland Security officials in this memo are requesting that the base be able to house and accommodate up to 250 Homeland Security agents from ICE and Border Patrol, and also 140 vehicles that are supporting those agents. We're also told that according to a U.S. official, there has already been a movement of people and equipment into that Naval Station, so it was granted that request by the Department of Defense, and this immigration enforcement campaign in Chicago could start as early as today and this weekend, we are told by U.S. officials. The request is for 30 days, suggesting that the operation could last for weeks. So this is to stage personnel for these operations, not detainees? Correct, because there is an ICE attention facility that can be used for that purpose in Chicago. One of the defining realities of the young Trump administration the second time around has been the use of military resources or military power in areas that had previously been considered to be off limits. So how unusual is it for the military to be drawn into an immigration-related matter? Well, historically, the use of the military for immigration enforcement under Democratic and Republican presidents was fairly limited to troops at the border supporting Border Patrol, but now the Trump administration is using the military in really unprecedented ways to support its mass deportation operation by deploying thousands of additional troops to the southern border to help Border Patrol by using military installations like Fort Bliss in Texas and Guantanamo Bay in Cuba to hold people awaiting deportation and by dispatching rather the National Guard to support ICE detention centers. Additionally, some military planes are being used for deportation operations to send people back to their native countries or third countries that are willing to receive them. So this is really an unprecedented effort by the administration to really muster the vast resources of the American military for this top domestic policy agenda item.
