More than a thousand structures have been destroyed and lives lost as wildfires sweep across parts of Los Angeles.

CBS News correspondent Carter Evans has revisited his neighborhood in Los Angeles, which has been severely affected by the Palisades fire. The destruction in the residential areas is extensive, with numerous homes and businesses completely destroyed. A once-thriving community that included a beloved strip mall, frequented by elementary students, is now unrecognizable.

Among the losses in the neighborhood are a family-favorite convenience store, an Italian restaurant, and a pharmacy, all left in ruins. Evans reflects on the deep impact on the community, particularly the small businesses that were crucial to its character. With uncertainty surrounding the future of these businesses, many residents are faced with not only the loss of their homes but also of the beloved local establishments that contributed to the neighborhood's unique identity.

Everywhere you look, there is just so much destruction. That was a thriving neighborhood there. Block after block after block after block, it's all gone. This was a little strip mall and it was special to my family because my daughter, when she went to elementary school right up the street, the fifth graders, every Friday, they'd come here to the little convenience store and they'd get sodas and candy and it was their first little taste of freedom. And now there's nothing. There was the Italian restaurant right up the street. The only thing that's left there now is their sign celebrating four years in this community. Same with the pharmacy that was right here. It was a small business. They told my wife, they didn't own the property here. They don't know what the landlord is gonna do. Their business is gone. And I think that that's something else that's important to think about in this community. It wasn't just the homeowners that made it what it was. It was these small businesses as well. And we don't know if they'll ever be back.

It was not clear if Hamas’ statement meant it had accepted the proposal from US President Donald Trump for a 60-day ceasefire.
