Prime Minister Mark Carney was one of 18 national leaders to speak at the United Nations on Monday about why they’ve chosen to formally recognize a Palestinian state as the war between Israel and Hamas continues.

Canada, alongside several Western and other nations, has formally recognized Palestinian statehood at the United Nations. The decision was motivated by concerns that the current Israeli government is actively preventing the establishment of a Palestinian state and is not pursuing peace. This recognition comes as conflict in Gaza intensifies, with widespread destruction of infrastructure and continued settlement expansion in the West Bank.

Israel and the United States did not participate in the recognition, and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has indicated that Israel will respond to these developments. Canada has also expressed willingness to contribute peacekeepers to a future Palestinian state, contingent on the end of ongoing hostilities. The UN session also highlighted upcoming remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump, who is expected to address the assembly and meet with other world leaders.

One after the next at the United Nations, countries including Canada laid out their reasons for recognizing Palestinian statehood. The current Israeli government is working methodically to prevent the prospect of a Palestinian state from ever being established. Mark Carney alongside several other Western nations who made their own statements before the UN. The time has come, said French President Emmanuel Macron, joining a wave of other nations, including from the European Union and the Arab League. I told them that when they voted on this resolution that it's a theater. Israel and the US stayed away. Most nations recognizing Palestinian statehood said they were motivated by the conclusion that the Israeli government doesn't intend to make peace or share the land. That is the policy of the current Israeli government and their actions are consistent with that policy. This comes as Israel's war in Gaza escalates with the systematic demolition of homes, schools, water systems and medical facilities. And in the West Bank, the Israeli army and settlers are also on the offensive, while the Israeli government announces new settlements. Israeli ministers continue to talk openly about the removal of all Palestinians from both territories. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would take concrete steps to respond to the recognitions when he returns home from New York. Some have interpreted that as a threat to formally annex all or part of the West Bank. I have been clear to the Israeli foreign minister. We have been clear to the Israeli government that they must not do that. Mark Carney also said Canada would be willing to contribute peacekeepers to a mission in a future Palestinian state. So Chris, Donald Trump, not here today, definitely here tomorrow. That's right. As you know, President Trump's second term has been all about shaping global politics, shaping the global economy. So as much as he has criticized the U.N., it's not a surprise that he's expected to make big moves here tomorrow. As a host country, the U.S. is always at the top of the speakers list during high-level week. The White House has said that this will be a major speech that will touch on American strength around the world. And then after that, President Trump will have his first bilateral meeting with the U.N. Secretary General, Antonio Guterres. He'll also be meeting with President Zelensky and other leaders. OK. A lot to watch for. What in particular will you be listening for? So Trump gave a speech every year of his first term. And the difference in this second term is that he is actually now someone that leaders are trying to court, appease, please. You know, one of his first appearances here at the United Nations, he famously bragged about being the most accomplished U.S. president in history. And the room laughed at him. Very unlikely that that's going to happen tomorrow, even though Trump has pulled out of several U.N. bodies as soon as he took office, even as he's lashed out against globalism. You know, what I'll really listen for is whether Trump will offer a vision for this institution that he says doesn't work well, but has a lot of potential. OK. Lots to follow. All right. Thank you.
