Canada has extended its military mission in Latvia for an additional three years, reaffirming its commitment to NATO and enhancing its defence posture in response to ongoing concerns about Russian aggression. The Canadian deployment in Latvia has grown significantly, now comprising 2,500 personnel, and is part of broader efforts to increase defence spending.

In addition to the mission extension, Canada is seeking to replace its aging fleet of submarines with a dozen new vessels, each estimated to cost around $2 billion. German and South Korean shipbuilders are competing for the contract, with discussions underway about potential collaboration with Canadian shipyards and accelerated delivery timelines. The new submarines are intended to bolster Canada's coastal and Arctic defence capabilities.

Meeting with the Prime Minister of Latvia, Mark Carney said Canadian troops would defend her country from any Russian aggression. An attack of any sort on this country is an attack on Canada as a member of the NATO alliance. Canadian troops have been in Latvia for more than 10 years to help deter the threat from Russia which has only grown. And so has the Canadian deployment, tripling in the last two years to 2,500 personnel. Now the Prime Minister is announcing a three-year extension to that mission, part of a commitment to NATO and to increasing defence spending. As part of that, Canada wants to replace its four ageing submarines bought used from the British nearly three decades ago with a dozen new ones to patrol its coasts at a cost of about $2 billion each. Tuesday Carney toured the ThyssenKrupp shipyard in Kiel, Germany. Thousands of NATO subs were made there. And it's purpose-built for Arctic and under-ice operations, I think ideal for Canada's defence needs and it could ensure security, sovereignty and NATO's circumpolar strength. South Korea's Hanwha Ocean is the only other shipbuilder in the running for that massive contract. But whoever wins it, there is a hope that some of that cash will stay in Canada. The assumption is we build it here, but I mean the customer is always right, right? So if they want or demand for special reasons to build them in Canada, we would also be able for that. Canada wants a sped-up timeline on these subs, which could be based on both Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The Koreans have said they could deliver the first sub by the end of the decade.
