Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand wrapped her first official visit to India stressing a desire to reset diplomatic and economic ties after allegations that Indian government agents had a role in the killing of Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil fractured relations in 2023.

Canada's foreign affairs minister has met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss a roadmap for improving bilateral relations, which had been strained following allegations that Indian government agents were involved in the killing of Canadian Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijer. The meeting focused on economic cooperation and trade, with both sides expressing a positive outlook and a desire to move forward. 

The diplomatic reset follows a change in Canadian leadership and an invitation for Modi to attend the G7 in Alberta. While economic necessity is a driving factor, with both countries affected by U.S. tariffs, public safety and transnational repression were also raised during the talks. Some groups, including those advocating for a separate Sikh state, remain critical of the renewed cooperation.

But a new Canadian Prime Minister and an invite for Modi to the G7 in Alberta paved the way for a tentative rapprochement. It may also be an economic necessity. With U.S. tariffs on exports crushing key industries in India and hitting Canadian steel and aluminum hard. I think we're in a different environment right now. The minister says it's time for a reset. We are in a moment where economic diplomacy, pragmatism is of crucial importance. Pragmatism winning the day. Even if the minister says she did bring up public safety concerns. At every stage, in every conversation, I made sure to bring up many topics including transnational repression. But not everybody is on board. The group that Nijer used to run before he was gunned down advocating for a separate Sikh state called Khalistan has a new leader who's facing death threats. We want Anita Nand to confront instead of cooperate with Modi's India. But Anand will want to keep the focus on her message of economic diplomacy when she lands in Singapore and later China.
