A surge in retail crime across the country has led to calls for unified government action, tougher penalties, and dedicated police units. Retail staff are increasingly facing threats, with many experiencing verbal and physical abuse.

Retail crime incidents have significantly increased across Australia, with approximately 800,000 cases reported in the past year. The majority of retailers have observed a rise in customer theft, and industry groups believe the issue is underreported. The Retailers Association is urging federal and state governments to implement consistent, tougher penalties for offenders and to establish dedicated police units to address the issue, particularly targeting repeat offenders. 

Cost of living pressures and organised youth crime have contributed to the rise, with technology such as facial recognition being considered as a potential solution. Surveys reveal that a large proportion of retail workers, many of whom are young women, experience verbal and physical abuse regularly, highlighting the need for greater respect and protection for retail staff.

Calls for tougher penalties for shoplifting

It's becoming an all too frequent occurrence. Retail staff are threatened and held up at knife point as gangs swoop. Every Australian should be concerned about the rise of retail crime in our nation. About 800,000 retail crime incidents were reported across Australia in the past year. 70% of retailers reported an increase in customer theft. The view is that retail crime is being underreported and so therefore that response is critical. Calling for immediate and unified action. The Retailers Association urging federal and state governments to come together, legislating consistent and tougher penalties for offenders as well as dedicated police retail crime units to deal with the increase, particularly in repeat offenders. 10% of offenders are responsible for 60% of the crime. The rising cost of goods only partly to blame. Certainly seeing subsistence crime go up as a result of cost of living pressures, that's happened over the last couple of years, but we're also seeing a lot of youth crime. Often that organised crime is using young people as vehicles in order to perpetrate the crime. The implementation of technology such as facial recognition is also on the agenda, but the industry peak body admits it'll need some fine tuning before its use is widespread. If we have the right responsible conversation about how it can be used, it is absolutely part of the mix. The survey of retailers also revealed 87% of workers have experienced verbal abuse, while 51% said they experience physical abuse monthly or more.
