A kindergarten in Brisbane has informed parents they must pay $2,200 to retain their children's artwork portfolios, which include drawings, paintings, and photos from the year. The centre claims the fee is to help cover over $40,000 owed to teachers, and warned that the keepsakes would be thrown out if parents did not pay.

Parents have expressed concern over the demand, with some reporting they were prevented from taking their children's creations home. The Department of Education stated that under national regulations, parents can request their child's documentation at no charge, and has launched an investigation into the matter.

The kindy claims the cash is to cover more than $40,000 the centre owes to teachers. Parents are told if they don't pay up, the keepsakes will be thrown out. I don't think it's a fair position for educators to be in where they're effectively having to ask parents to fundraise for their wages because they're not being paid. Brooke Dolan says she tried to take her child's creations home two weeks ago but claims she was stopped by a staff member. But since then, parents who've gone down to try and get their folios, he's refused saying that it's association property. And he did say that to us when we were leaving, that we were stealing association properties. That day, a break and enter report was filed with Queensland Police. I'm not quite sure what that report was about, if it was in relation to me or not. The Department of Education says under national regulations, parents can request their child's documentation at any time and at no charge. Education officials have now launched an investigation, trying to make contact with the kindergarten to discuss what happens next. 10 News has reached out to the centre but has had no response.
