Breast cancer affects more than 2.2 million women worldwide each year, with over 61,000 new cases reported annually in France alone. According to the World Health Organization, breast cancer is among the top three cancers affecting women in every country, regardless of income levels. 

Advancements in treatment and early diagnosis have led to a significant increase in survival rates, rising from three out of four women surviving 25 years ago to nine out of ten today. Awareness campaigns and regular screenings, such as self-breast checks and mammograms, are emphasized as vital tools in the fight against breast cancer.

Breast Cancer: more than 2 million women diagnosed each year

For the past eight months, Laetitia has been fighting breast cancer. Diagnosed earlier this year, it's been a struggle, with round after round of chemotherapy. I was bedbound, I was so tired. I had a lot of side effects. Since I've started this second series of weekly chemotherapy, it's been a bit better. After both an operation and cycles of chemotherapy, there's now light at the end of the tunnel. She's on her last infusion. I'm relishing the uniqueness of it. It's a step in my journey of treatment. In this hospital in La Rochelle, in Western France, Laetitia is one of 500 women being treated for breast cancer. Nationwide, there are over 61,000 women who are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in France. And over 2.2 million women diagnosed worldwide. That's according to the World Health Organization's 2022 figures. Although rates are very high in Western countries, including in France, even in countries where rates are much lower, in lower income countries, it's still amongst the top three cancers in the cancer profile of women in all countries. So there's no country in the world that can afford not to have a breast cancer control plan. Early detection campaigns and rapid access to care are all the more important. Because today, treatments are more effective than they once were. Over the past 25 years, the survival rate has gone from three out of four women to nine out of ten. This is thanks to progress in treatment, but also early diagnosis. We catch it better, so we treat it earlier and better. Awareness campaigns like Pink October are a reminder how important it is to do self-breast checks and mammograms. It's a moment also to support the increasing number of women who have or have had breast cancer.
