Many breast cancer patients will get a financial boost, with key drug Truqap now listed on the PBS. Used for locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer, it will now cost just $31 per prescription, saving patients thousands annually.

A new anti-cancer drug called Trucap, which targets the AKT protein involved in cell growth and survival, is now available to Australians with advanced or metastatic breast cancer at a significantly reduced cost. Previously, the treatment was prohibitively expensive, costing patients up to $100,000 per course. With its listing on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme, eligible patients will pay a maximum of $31 per monthly script, dropping to $25 in the near future. 

The drug is expected to benefit around 3,000 women and some men each year, allowing patients to delay more toxic treatments such as chemotherapy. Patients like Adelaide mother Kim report improved quality of life and more time with loved ones due to Trucap's effectiveness and accessibility.

First diagnosed with early stage breast cancer at 50, then metastatic cancer four years ago, Adelaide mum Kim says a game-changing drug has given her reason to hope. It's very daunting when you get a diagnosis that sort of puts a limit on your life. She has been taking Trucap for the past three months and says it's drastically improved her quality of life. I've been on chemo before so for me personally it's been fabulous because I've got my better taste in my mouth. Trucap is an anti-cancer drug that blocks the activity of a protein called AKT, which is important for cell growth and survival. It can reduce the growth and spread of cancer and help to destroy cancer cells. It is a cutting-edge treatment for particular types of advanced or metastatic breast cancer. But it's been out of reach for most eligible patients who are facing costs of $100,000 for a course of treatment. You don't need another financial stress while you're struggling with cancer. The less stress you can have about worrying about things like that, the better. From Wednesday, patients will pay a maximum of $31 per monthly script and just $25 from January when it's listed on the PBS. Which will enable them to delay more toxic treatments, chemotherapy treatments, hopefully for many, many months. This new listing, Trucap, will provide that additional hope. We think to about 3,000 women and a few men as well every single year. For Kim, it's brought extra precious time with her family.
