A 38-year-old man, Cody Ballmer, has been sentenced to 25 to 50 years in prison after pleading guilty to attempted murder and arson charges following an attack on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's official residence. Surveillance video shows Ballmer breaking windows and throwing Molotov cocktails into the mansion while the governor, his family, guests, and state troopers were inside.

Governor Shapiro, in response to the sentencing and release of the footage, emphasized the growing threat of political violence and urged the public not to become desensitized to such incidents. He highlighted a significant increase in threats against federal elected officials in recent years.

We begin tonight with the just-released surveillance video of the arson attack this past April on Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's official residence. A 38-year-old was sentenced to up to 50 years in prison today after pleading guilty to attempted murder and arson charges. Justice Correspondent Scott McFarlane joins me with the details. So Scott, what new information did we learn from the proceedings today? We're seeing a lot of things we haven't seen before. This fire happened April 13th, second night of Passover, at Governor Shapiro's mansion. Cody Ballmer pleaded guilty today. He's the one who will serve 25 to 50 years. But as part of the proceedings, you get your first look at those images on the right of your screen. Surveillance video outside the mansion in Harrisburg. You see it there. The Molotov cocktail in the window, igniting. Ballmer not only broke the window and threw that Molotov cocktail in, but later in the video, you'll see him break in a second window as he approaches it there, gets inside, and ignites another Molotov cocktail while kicking and banging at the doors inside as the governor and his family were in rooms nearby sleeping with many guests and state troopers inside. John, this is a very visual, visceral image, and the governor has said today these images still haunt him six months later. What is the governor saying in addition to that? He's trying to make a broader argument today with the release of this footage, with the sentencing in Harrisburg, that political violence is growing exponentially and out of control. Take a listen to some of what the governor said before reporters in Pennsylvania today. I think it's important that in this time of rising political violence that none of us grow numb to it or accept this as the normal course of doing business for elected officials. Let me give you one number to close here, John, federal elected official threats. There have been hundreds more this year than there were in all of 2024 and several thousand more this year than there were as recently as 2018 and 2019.
