The world's largest biofactory for breeding mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia bacteria, a method researchers use to combat dengue, hopes to protect some 140 million people from the disease in Brazil over the coming years.

A biofactory in Curitiba, Brazil, is producing up to 100 million mosquito eggs each week, with the mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia bacteria. This bacteria prevents Aedes aegypti mosquitoes from transmitting dengue, a disease that infects hundreds of millions globally each year. 

The mosquitoes are released to spread the bacteria among local mosquito populations, reducing dengue transmission. The initiative follows successful programs in Australia and Indonesia, with early results in Brazil showing up to an 89% reduction in dengue cases in some areas. The project prioritizes regions most affected by dengue, which caused nearly 6,300 deaths in Brazil in 2024.

The world's most deadly species is being bred to be safer at a mega biofactory in Curitiba, Brazil. It aims to produce 100 million mosquito eggs each week infected with the Wobakia bacteria, which stops the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes from transmitting dengue, a potentially fatal disease. The World Health Organization says dengue infects hundreds of millions of people every year. The mosquitoes hatched here are released so that instead of transmitting dengue to humans, they infect other mosquitoes with the bacteria that doesn't spread to people. The Wobito do Brasil plant opened in July and has plans to be as impactful as programs seen in other parts of the world, says production manager Antonio Brandão. We have some really great results protecting people. So in Australia, more than 12 years without circulation of dengue virus, only imported cases arrived in the country. And we had the randomized study control in Indonesia, showing a 77% of reduction in dengue. And in Brazil, last week, we are in August, we had the update of the first city, Niterói, and showing 89% reduction in dengue cases. Nearly 6,300 people died from dengue in Brazil in 2024, the worst year on record. The operations team are prioritizing releasing the new mosquitoes into the worst hit areas to reduce dengue hotspots.
