The United Nations has reported that the majority of Gaza's hospitals have been destroyed during the conflict, severely restricting access to medical care for residents.

Alongside Adam, dozens of other children and adults are being flown out for urgent treatment, while thousands remain in Gaza facing malnutrition and disease due to ongoing blockades of food, water, and medicine. Adam's mother, a doctor at a local hospital, lost her husband and all other children in the attack, a tragedy experienced by many families in the region.

During 20 months of war in Gaza, the United Nations says Israel has destroyed 94% of its hospitals and prevented many people from getting medical care abroad. But now the organization is flying out dozens of children and some adults to get the medicine and treatment they desperately need. Adam al-Najjar is among them. He vividly remembers the day his home was attacked. He was there with his nine siblings and their father when it was struck by a huge blast and the roof collapsed. Everything was normal. Then they launched a missile at our building. Smoke came out. Then another missile hit us and leveled the entire building with the ground. All my siblings were killed. Adam's mother, Alaa, is a doctor at Nassar Hospital in southern Gaza and was on duty when the dead bodies of her children arrived. Her critically injured husband was among them. But he later died because of his wounds, a tragic story that's been replicated thousands of times since Israel launched its war on Gaza. Diseases and the threat of death are not all that the children in Gaza suffer. There is also malnutrition. Israel has blocked the entry of food, water, fuel and medicine, fueling a spread of infectious diseases. Osama was suffering from chronic diarrhoea, coughing and chest infections. The doctors in Gaza didn't have the equipment to diagnose his condition as it worsened. He developed severe malnutrition. A five-year-old child is supposed to be between 16 and 18 kilograms. My son, Osama, weighs only nine. For those being evacuated, a chance to receive urgent health care. But thousands more remain trapped in Gaza. And that number keeps rising.
