For both people and wildlife in Santa Cruz, big weather events are nothing new, but a tsunami advisory after an earthquake nearly5,000 miles away is a little less common. When similar events it happened in 2011 and 2022, it left a big mess behind in Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz Harbor has returned to normal operations following the cancellation of a tsunami advisory that prompted precautionary measures by harbor officials. The advisory, triggered by an earthquake thousands of miles away, resulted in minimal damage, with only some pylons affected and no significant incidents reported.

Local authorities noted that the area avoided the extensive damage seen in previous tsunamis in 2011 and 2022. Boaters and residents largely complied with safety protocols, and officials continue to monitor conditions for any additional impacts.

Boaters hit Santa Cruz waters as tsunami advisory lifts

Back to business as usual for boaters in Santa Cruz Harbor today after the tsunami advisory was canceled. That advisory had harbor officials busy as they worked to keep the community informed overnight. Now, you may remember when a smaller tsunami hit the harbor in 2022. It was caused by a volcano collapse on the Polynesian island of Tonga. That tsunami did more than $6 million in damage in the Santa Cruz area, primarily to boats in that harbor. KTVU's Tori Gaines joins us now live from Santa Cruz with more. Tori? Yeah, good evening. So we're here at Lighthouse Point in Santa Cruz where folks are telling us they haven't really been seeing too many impacts after this most recent tsunami advisory. But the Santa Cruz Harbor Port Director also says she's thankful that the area didn't get hit as badly as they did in 2011 or 2022. For people and wildlife in Santa Cruz, big weather events are nothing new. But a tsunami advisory after an earthquake nearly 5,000 miles away is a little less common. We've been getting some tsunami warnings over the past couple of years and a lot of them just taper out to not too much. Otherwise it was nice and flat this morning and we had lots of whales, lots of sea lions feeding on them and it was just a great time. But officials with the Santa Cruz Harbor say even if the water seems calm, there are still some risks. The tsunami advisory has recently been lifted and even with that being lifted, there's still hazardous marine conditions out there, strong surge, kind of unpredictable ocean conditions. Those out on the water Wednesday morning say it was a little choppy, but not too bad. I don't think I can hold them. I gotta just go like this. Yeah. Yeah. Yep. It's heavy. According to fishing guide Eric Andreessen and his friend from Long Island, the windy weather brought in a little good luck, 35 pounds of good luck as a matter of fact. It was honestly a slower bite until we landed these two back to back. So that was kind of a pleasant surprise. Andreessen says he heeds emergency warnings, but they can be hard to trust when several are sent out each year. A little bit of a surge. Obviously there's potential for a lot of damage, but sometimes it's just overblown a little bit. Does it feel hard to not get desensitized then? Sure. Yeah. Yeah. It is what it is though. I mean, it's just the nature of it. Better to be safe than sorry. Right. So I get it. But those in Santa Cruz who witnessed over a hundred million dollars in damage from the 2011 and 2022 tsunamis know that safety alerts can make all the difference. This event, we did not sustain as much damage as we did in 2011 or 2022. And so we're still currently assessing, you know, as the surge is continuing to persist today. We're just monitoring for any additional impacts. Now the port director says the damages from this particular event have been minimal. Some of the pylons have been damaged. But one thing we did notice today, there aren't any surfers out here in Santa Cruz. There aren't any surfers out on the water, which is a big surprise. We weren't expecting as many of these folks to heed these warnings. So it's good that folks are following safety protocols. We're live this evening in Santa Cruz, Tori Gaines, KTVU, Fox 2 News. Yep.
