While the backlog of overdue surgeries has reportedly been mostly cleared, the shortage of GPs continues to lengthen wait times for primary care.

If you look at the rate of graduation for those in the medical departments of the major universities, it used to be above 50% would go into general practice. Now, at UNSW, I think the number's around 25% and falling. Today, the government announced a $30 million investment in short-stay surgery to increase hospital capacity and reduce surgery wait times. It's often called elective surgery. For many people, it's essential surgery. While this government funding has been welcomed by the Australian Medical Association, it also warns that one-off cash injections aren't enough to fix a health system in distress, and long-term solutions are needed. We are seeing short-term fixes, but we are seeing no long-term reform. The health minister claims the backlog of overdue surgeries is now more than 85% cleared, now back at pre-COVID levels.
