A bipartisan coalition of lawmakers has reintroduced the Dignity Act, a bill designed to offer a path to legal status for undocumented immigrants who have lived in the United States for at least five years, have no criminal record, and are contributing to key sectors such as construction, hospitality, and agriculture. The legislation, sponsored by Florida Republican Maria Salazar and Texas Democrat Veronica Escobar, would require applicants to pass a criminal background check, pay back taxes, and submit $7,000 in restitution, while excluding them from federal benefits or entitlements.

The bill also proposes improvements to border infrastructure, reductions in visa backlogs, and reforms to the asylum process. Around 20 lawmakers from both parties have endorsed the measure, reflecting a bipartisan effort to address longstanding immigration challenges and provide stability for millions of undocumented residents.
