Beloved father-son triathletes Jeff and Johnny Agar are getting back in the saddle months after Jeff faced a near-fatal diagnosis. In June, at just 62 years old, Jeff underwent triple bypass surgery. David Begnaud has more on the story for his series "Beg-Knows America."

Jeff and Johnny Agar, recognized for their participation as a father-son duo in triathlons, faced a major setback when Jeff suffered a near-fatal heart condition during a race. After undergoing triple bypass surgery at age 62, Jeff credited his recovery to his physical fitness, the sport, and the support of his son Johnny, who has cerebral palsy.

Despite these challenges, the Agars have continued to compete, including participating in the 2024 Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. Their story has been widely recognized as an example of perseverance and mutual support, with Jeff vowing to keep racing with Johnny and Johnny expressing gratitude for his father's unwavering dedication.

It's been exactly three years since we introduced you to Jeff and Johnny Agar, the father and son triathletes who are achieving the insurmountable in the world of endurance sports. David shows us how they are defying the odds yet once again. It's the first time back in the saddle for father and son triathletes, Jeff and Johnny Agar. Doing okay, Dad? Yeah. Since Jeff faced a near fatal diagnosis. This burning sensation was telling me that I'm not getting a blood flow to my heart. And I started feeling things in my chest. I knew right then something was going on. Shockingly, one of my arteries is 100% blocked, one was 80%, another one is 50%. Jeff and Johnny were in the middle of running a local 15-mile race in their hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan, when Jeff started feeling those symptoms. In June, at 62 years old, Jeff underwent triple bypass surgery. During his summer-long recovery, one step at a time, the Agars have come to believe that thanks to his extraordinary level of fitness, this sport and Johnny are ultimately what saved Jeff's life. Got a good cadence going and everything. Thank you. It took me some time to process it. It really gave me an opportunity to say, okay, I wasn't the one that harmed him, I was the one that helped to save him, so that gave me a lot of peace and strength. Look, nearly every parent receives the gift of joy from their children, but it's not often that they receive the gift of life. Knees up, head high, buddy. Jeff was helping Johnny to set this goal that Johnny wanted to achieve, and in the process, Johnny was helping Jeff and giving back to him. That's the full circle moment for me. See 31-year-old Johnny being born with cerebral palsy, which is a muscle disorder that makes it impossible for him to walk without assistance. Johnny has conquered countless triathlons thanks to his partner in stride. During the swim, Jeff pulls Johnny. When they bike, he hauls him, and when they run, he pushes. Mom's cooking when we get home. I'm not doing it because I love it. It wasn't like a dream of mine. This is Johnny's dream. I'm just giving him the legs and the power to do it. The Yeagars have become one of the most recognizable duos in the usual solo sport of triathlon, inspired by the pioneer father-son triathletes Dick and Rick Hoyt. With his dad as his motor, Johnny has achieved the insurmountable. He's completed a full Ironman race, a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike, and a 26.2-mile run, walking across the finish line for his team with just four minutes to spare. A year later, we called on NFL star Peyton Manning. It is my honor to share with you that Team Yeagar has earned an official invite to the 2024 Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. Who helped us break that news. The Yeagars then went on to Hawaii to compete in the world's toughest endurance event. Look, it's an honor because only one duo team typically gets invited every year. Today, the Yeagars are still defining the odds and proving Ironman's mantra to be true, that anything is possible. It shouldn't come as a surprise by now that Jeff has vowed it's not a question of if he'll compete in races again with Johnny, it's just a matter of when. When I see Johnny get excited about what he does and what we're doing together as a team, it brings great closure for me that I'm doing everything I possibly can to help him out. He's really given me infinity of blessings and I'm really grateful not just to be able to race but have the best motor in the world. Boy, a father's love for his son. I keep marveling at both of them, how they're able to do that. Dad in particular. It is really amazing. You're talking about just the mechanics of the distances and the pulling. The pulling and the running. The swimming. Yeah, and just him living a life fulfilled. When that father's days are done, he can rest easy knowing that he did everything he could for every person in his family and of course, in particular, his son. He said when he sees his son smile, it means everything. I get it. Family comes first.
