The Better Business Bureau (BBB) has reported a significant rise in scams and complaints linked to online gaming and gambling, with nearly 200 scam reports and over 10,000 complaints received from 2022 to mid-2025. Scammers are exploiting the growing legality of online gambling in many states by creating fake websites and enticing consumers with promises of high payouts and sweepstakes.

The BBB advises consumers to be wary of red flags such as big payout promises, vague ads, overseas business locations, cryptocurrency payments, and typos in website names. A Florida woman shared her experience of losing $5,000 after using a fraudulent app that mimicked a legitimate casino. The BBB recommends verifying the legitimacy of gambling sites and reporting scams through its scam tracker tool.

And new tonight the Better Business Bureau is warning people also they need to be careful of illegal gambling websites. A woman who lost thousands of dollars spoke to our Julie Solomon about the red flags she missed. The Better Business Bureau says it received nearly 200 scam reports and more than 10,000 complaints related to online gambling and gaming from 2022 to mid 2025. So online gambling has become legal amongst many states and that's a recent trend that's been happening. So scammers are seeing this opportunity to create fake websites, post online gambling websites and entice consumers to come online and think that they're gambling. Brian Oglesby with the BBB says online gray market and illegal gambling operations are becoming widespread. He says look for these red flags if gambling. Big promises around payouts, tempting ads without details, overseas business locations, sweepstakes style games, payment through cryptocurrency and typos and names. Be careful of these social media ads popping up when you're scrolling through. They're going to entice you with high payouts. They're going to make a lot of promises and don't just click and then invest money and start playing this casino. Know who the company is. Kathy Moore says she lost $5,000 after playing slots online. She says it appeared she won a $15,000 jackpot but never saw any money. So I went in to try to collect my winnings and after many emails and everything I just knew that I had been scammed. In Florida only sports betting is legal online through the Hard Rock Bet app. Moore says she downloaded what she thought was the Hard Rock Casino app but it was not the casino's legitimate app. I had this little icon that said Hard Rock and when I clicked on it it took me to this other site.
