Despite the physical challenges, including daily medication and fatigue, Dalin maintained his lead and overcame technical difficulties, such as repairing his boat's mast. After finishing the race nine days ahead of the previous record, Dalin kept his illness private until now. Following the race, he underwent surgery to remove the tumour and his condition is currently stable. Dalin has ruled out competing in the next Vendée Globe but hopes to participate in the Route du Rhum in the future.

His performance was already extraordinary, completing a grueling solo round-the-world trip in a record 64 days. But as sailor Charlie Dalin reveals in a new memoir, he did it all while suffering from cancer. I competed in the Vendée Globe with a tumour the size of a grapefruit in my stomach. It was definitely an additional challenge. In October 2023, one year before the Vendée Globe was due to get underway, the skipper learned he had a rare form of gastrointestinal cancer. Following the initial shock, doubt and the first treatment, Dalin soon wanted to gain back strength and get back on the water. After some time, he felt physically capable and received the green light from doctors. At that moment, I told myself that even if I finished in a bad position, it didn't matter. There are worse things in life than losing at a sporting competition. Despite everything, I had to adapt my sailing style to this new condition. The priority was really to lie down and rest as much as I could. During the race, Dalin took medication daily. Despite the fatigue, he managed to stay ahead of his competitors, all while facing technical challenges, including repairing the mast of his boat Massif, climbing 28 metres high. When he arrived at Les Sables d'Olonne nine days ahead of the previous record, Dalin savoured the moment, not mentioning his illness to the public. I wanted to enjoy the race and not have the spotlight on anything else. It's a victory in the race, but also a victory over illness. Not long after crossing the finish line, the tumour grew again and Dalin had to have it removed. Today, his condition is stable. The 41-year-old skipper is slowly gaining back strength and says the next Vendée Globe won't be possible. He does, however, hold some hope of sailing in the Route du Rhum in 2026, from Saint-Malo to Guadeloupe.
