Electric bikes, scooters and even skateboards may be banned from Sydney trains and metro services amid fears of onboard fires, sparked by lithium batteries.

Transport for NSW is weighing a potential temporary ban on e-bikes, e-skateboards, and e-scooters from train and metro services following incidents involving lithium battery fires. The proposal, which is not yet enforceable, is being considered as a precaution until the safety of these devices can be assured.

With over 1.3 million e-mobility devices in use across New South Wales, the proposed ban has sparked concern among users and advocates, particularly those who rely on these devices for commuting and business. Signs warning of battery risks have already appeared at Sydney stations, and public consultation has been called for before any final decision is made.

I don't think so it's a good idea, but it's one of the facilities where people can travel without, you know, with less cost. With 1.3 million devices in NSW, they're rapidly becoming a popular mode of transport, with advocates arguing this change would disadvantage those reliant on e-mobility to make up for gaps in connectivity. Everyone from the gig economy riders and delivery riders to those that have small businesses, to get them to an effective form of public transport, that generally, of course, being trains. The restriction prematurely imposed as signs popped up at Sydney stations warning of the risks of lithium batteries. And if successfully introduced, the ban would likely be in place by September 1st, but until then, it isn't enforceable, but simply a request. We're pushing on government that they must do some public consultation on this issue because it affects thousands and thousands of people unfairly. Olivia Blunden, 10 News.
