Australia and the UK have formalized a five-decade treaty as part of the AUKUS submarine agreement, aiming to enhance shipbuilding and defense capabilities. The agreement is expected to create thousands of jobs and strengthen regional security.

Australia and the United Kingdom have signed a fifty-year treaty to reinforce the AUKUS submarine pact, which also includes the United States. The agreement aims to boost shipbuilding industries in both countries and facilitate Australia's acquisition of nuclear-powered attack submarines in the coming decades. 

The deal is described as the most significant industrial project in Australia's history, with an estimated 20,000 jobs to be created. Officials emphasized that the enhanced defense capability is intended to maintain peace and security in the region, without directly naming any specific threat.

To see 20,000 jobs created in Australia it is the most significant industrial endeavour that our country has ever undertaken eclipsing that even of the snowy hydro scheme. The bilateral agreement falls under the trilateral Orcas agreement which is currently being scrutinised by the Trump administration. Amid rising global political tensions the Deputy Prime Minister stressed the increased capability of our Defence Force is fundamentally about maintaining peace and security in the region without explicitly naming China as a posing threat. It is absolutely essential that Australia and our Defence Force has the capability to give pause for thought for any potential adversary that would seek to coerce us.
