Urban beekeepers face logistical challenges, such as transporting hives through buildings, but remain committed to fostering biodiversity in the city. The honey produced is named after its neighborhood of origin and is praised by locals for its quality and flavor.

With the need for natural food products constantly increasing, some Athenians decided to take matters into their own hands, and in an original way, by taking care of bee hives on the rooftops of apartment buildings in the center of Athens. Nikos Tsatsilias spends his days taking care of bee colonies that are voluntarily hosted by residents on their roofs, and it all started with a test. We took two hives at home that needed a little more care, and I wanted to see how the bee colony was doing. I saw that it was doing very well for the hives, we were very happy with the daily contact with the hives, and that's why we continued. Despite the growing interest, beekeeping in the city center also has its obstacles. This is because residents often object, fearing that the bees will sting them. There are also, however, many of those who promote urban beekeeping. When I was in school and we learned about hives, I really liked the idea of having my own. I think that it's also good for the environment, because hives decrease, so if everyone could have a hive in an open space of their home, I believe that it would change our environment to a great extent. This summer, Tsitsilias tended to 30 hives that he placed on seven rooftops in the Athens area, including one with a view of the Parthenon. His approximately 1.2 million bees produced 500 kilograms of honey. The Athenian beekeeper's goal is to get other interested people into urban beekeeping. After three years of our presence here, people have started to want to do it, and they contact us specifically for this reason, to put hives in the city, so yes, there is an interest. A major challenge of urban beekeeping is transporting the hives to the stairs of buildings in the spring and taking them down before winter, often passing through people's homes to reach the roof. For me, what it means is hope, that even as we have created a very comfortable urban environment, the nature that has remained in the city still responds and can give life. Each batch of honey is named after the region or neighborhood from which it comes. Those who've tried it say they're fanatical consumers of urban honey. Even when I have tasted the honey from the countryside, from other producers, personally, the taste for me is exactly what I want. They emphasize that it's far superior to what is sold in supermarkets and has a rich flavor.
