A surge of arctic air has led to hazardous weather across the Great Lakes, producing heavy lake effect snow and dangerous whiteout conditions for a second consecutive day. Western New York, especially areas south of Buffalo, has seen over 29 inches of snow, stranding truck drivers and challenging road crews.

Much of the southern United States is under winter storm watches, with snow and ice expected to begin impacting the region soon. Residents are preparing by stocking up on supplies, and services in Texas are advising proactive measures to prevent issues such as frozen pipes.

A huge part of the country is bracing for the impact of another wintry blast, even as heavy snow continues to fall in western New York. Some areas have gotten more than two feet. Much of the south is also under winter storm watches for snow and ice, and it's expected to begin on Friday. Tom Hanson has more. Arctic air surging across the Great Lakes brought dangerous whiteouts and heavy lake effect snow for the second day in a row. Just south of Buffalo, New York, more than 29 inches fell in Eden, and dozens of truck drivers got stranded early Tuesday at this rest stop in Angola. We met snowplow operator Melanie Wacharski battling the tough winter conditions. I can't wrap my head around how you can have such different amounts of snowfall in such a short distance. Right. That's pretty crazy. That's crazy. It is. And as a driver that's been doing this, it's still crazy. Wacharski has been clearing roads across western New York for more than 20 years. With the wind and drifting snow, people are so accustomed to going a certain speed, and then they come across a whiteout and stop. That's really a bad hazard. The next winter storm is expected to wallop parts of the south beginning Friday, where people are stocking up on supplies like firewood and salt. One plumbing service in Texas is helping people prevent their pipes from freezing. It is important just to be proactive and make sure that things don't escalate into something that could be really bad. For CBS Mornings, Tom Hanson, Buffalo, New York.
