The White House says the U.S. president has not made time to meet with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese while the leaders are in New York for the United Nations General Assembly.

While France announced its recognition of Palestine, Albanese noted that this depends on the Palestinian Authority meeting certain conditions, including excluding Hamas from governance.

The United States did not participate in the recognition, with President Trump expressing opposition to the move and declining a formal meeting with Albanese. Instead, Trump scheduled bilateral meetings with other world leaders. This marks the second time Albanese has left North America without a formal meeting with the US President, though he is expected to encounter Trump at a reception.

The Prime Minister assembled to state his case on an issue that isn't uniting all nations. The recognition of Palestinian statehood. It is about real hope for a place to call home. Anthony Albanese was one of 38 speakers at the United Nations General Assembly on the two state solution. Right now Gaza is in the grip of a humanitarian catastrophe and the Israeli government must accept its share of responsibility. His criticism of Israel didn't stop there. Threats to annex parts of Palestine and permanently displace the Palestinian people. Such conduct risks putting a two state solution beyond reach. The French President has led this charge. I declare that France recognises today the state of Palestine. But it hinges on the Palestinian Authority delivering on the promises it's made. Hamas will have no role in governing. Hamas and other factions must surrender their weapons to the Palestinian Authority. The United States didn't take part. As for all of these Western nations that are recognising a Palestinian state, the President has been very clear he disagrees with this decision. And the President will make that clear tomorrow. Frankly he believes it's a reward to Hamas. President Trump will be here at the United Nations tomorrow but he won't be having a formal meeting with Anthony Albanese. The White House has revealed he hasn't made time for the Australian leader in his schedule. A bruising result for the Prime Minister. The President will also be hosting bilateral meetings with the UN Secretary General and the leaders of Ukraine, Argentina and the European Union. The Prime Minister is still expected to come face to face with the President at a reception tomorrow night. But it's the second time he's leaving North America without a formal sit down. I've got no doubt that at some point in the near future there'll be a meeting. We need the meeting, we need it to be calm, we need it to be considered and we need our Prime Minister to be there standing up for our national interest. In New York, Ashley Raper, 10 News.
