This film is based on the real-life story of South Florida attorney Willie Gary who took on some of the biggest companies in the world including Microsoft, Disney and Anheuser-Busch and he got most of them to pay up. Now Amazon Prime could be next. Tia, back to explain. This is really interesting because the movie is actually a really good movie. Attorneys announcing a lawsuit together. They're accusing Amazon Prime of NIL, name, image and likeness violations. The suit was filed in DC but announced today at the National Bar Association conference happening right here in Chicago. The film focuses on one case in Mississippi involving a funeral homeowner played by Tommy Lee Jones. The case turned into one of the largest jury verdicts in US history. Attorney Willie Gray is or I should say Gary is played by Jamie Foxx another standout character in the biographical film Hal Dawkins and it is with this character that the lawsuit is based. A legal team representing Dawkins says Amazon Prime never even asked for his permission to use his name and likeness and Dawkins is portrayed for roughly 40 minutes in the nearly three hour long film. You hear about NIL and you think that it's just about athletes about college athletes getting a lot of money but before college athletes could be paid their money there always have been causes of action, litigation surrounding privacy, the misuse, the misappropriation of someone's name, image and likeness. It's a violation. This is a commercial case. It's a civil case. It's a serious case because ladies and gentlemen what is the value of your reputation? The attorney there Hoffler also says it was important to announce this suit right here in Chicago because of the significance of the National Bar Association, the country's oldest and largest National Association of predominantly African-American lawyers, judges, law professors and law students. The conference began Sunday and wraps up tomorrow night with a special guest speaker and that's former President Joe Biden. He is scheduled to address the closing gala.
