Severe air turbulence is occurring more frequently, with recent incidents resulting in passenger injuries and even fatalities. Scientific studies indicate that climate change, particularly warmer air from increased CO2 emissions, is causing greater wind shear in jet streams and strengthening clear air turbulence. 

Researchers have found that severe turbulence increased by 55% between 1979 and 2020, especially over the U.S. and North Atlantic. The aviation industry faces significant financial impacts, with turbulence costing hundreds of millions of dollars annually in the U.S. alone. Pilots and airlines are being urged to adapt by improving training and updating technology, as traditional weather avoidance models become less reliable.

Air turbulence incidents on the rise

We've all been there, 30,000 feet when the turbulence hits. And if you think and sense that you're feeling it more often and more severely, it turns out you're right. CNBC's senior climate correspondent, Diana Olek, explains why in her continuing series on rising risks from climate change. Take a look. Severe air turbulence is still considered rare, but it is fast becoming less so. Last month, 25 passengers were hospitalized due to turbulence on a flight out of Salt Lake City. And last year, several instances of severe turbulence resulted in dozens of injuries and even one fatality. Scientists say the culprit is climate. Turbulence should be increasing over time due to climate change. University of Georgia professor, John Knox, researches atmospheric dynamics. We will have more turbulence outside of thunderstorms, far away from thunderstorms, but we also are likely to have more turbulence around and also above thunderstorms. Severe air turbulence increased 55% between 1979 and 2020, according to a study by scientists at Reading University in the UK. The U.S. and North Atlantic have seen the largest increases. And the scientists say warmer air from CO2 emissions is increasing wind shear in the jet streams, strengthening clear air turbulence. Reading researcher, Mark Prosser, wrote airlines will need to start thinking about how they'll manage the increased turbulence as it costs the industry $150 to $500 million annually in the USA alone. He noted wear and tear on aircrafts. We are absolutely seeing an increase in not just turbulence, but also just wind speeds as we're crossing oceans. The speed of the jet streams has increased really pretty noticeably. Shem Malmquist has been flying large jets for over 30 years. With warming oceans, the way that thunderstorms portray themselves and the way we identify them using weather radar is actually changing. And because of that, they are harder to identify and makes it easier for pilots to end up flying inadvertently into a convective storm. That increases the type of turbulence we encounter. It begs the question, should pilot training be updated to account for this? A turbulence page on the FAA's website says the administration is taking actions that include improving data collection and sharing, modernizing the system where pilots communicate weather conditions including turbulence, and improving automation so pilots and air traffic controllers can digitally enter and share reports rather than verbally. But Malmquist said he still thinks pilots need more training. The models that we used historically for weather avoidance are just becoming invalid over time and we need to do a better job of educating the pilots so they can understand what they're encountering. And just looking closer at the economic impact from turbulence, while the planes themselves can supposedly withstand it, the damage done inside the cabin can be very costly. That's to luggage bins, carts, seats, and video screens. And when you take an aircraft out of service for those repairs, that affects schedules and capacity due to fewer seats. Malmquist said that cost is likely going to be passed down, of course, to the consumer. Back to you guys. I hate turbulence. I hate it. And it has been rising. It's like on every flight. And the more I fly, it doesn't make me more comfortable. So thank you for explaining this, Diana. Okay.
