After Air Canada rejected his request, Laundrie pursued further compensation, ultimately winning his case in Ontario's Small Claims Court in November 2024. Air Canada appealed, but the Superior Court upheld the original decision. The airline has 30 days to appeal further, while advocates argue the case underscores issues with Air Canada's customer service.

Air Canada recently lost an appeal against an Ottawa man for a payout of $15,000. It's the latest ruling in a case that has been working its way through the courts for the past three years. In July of 2022, Rajon Laundrie and his two children were set to fly from Montreal to Portugal. But after arriving at the airport, their flight was repeatedly delayed over the next 24 hours. Frustrated, Laundrie bought three new replacement tickets. In the following months, he asked the airline to reimburse him for the tickets. Laundrie says that rejection caused him to look into further compensation. The delay had also caused the cancellation of his children's return tickets back to Canada, and he realized he could get reimbursement for those flights too. Eventually, he took the airline to Ontario's Small Claims Court. In November 2024, he won the case. But Air Canada pushed back and decided to appeal. On Monday, Ontario's Superior Court dismissed that appeal. But Air passenger advocates say Air Canada should have never fought the case in the first place, given the publicity it garnered over some of the airline's negative customer service practices. Now they got a second legal document saying you treated the passengers dismally, you should be paying. Lukacs says he's unsure how this will influence Air Canada's decisions to litigate in the future, but hopes it sends a message to the airline. Not litigate just because they can afford the lawyers, while the passenger may have to take time off from the work.
