AI systems operate from power-intensive data centers, which place additional strain on the existing power grid shared by homes and businesses. 

Lawmakers and energy experts have raised concerns that the current grid may not be equipped to handle this increased demand. The cost of supplying more power is distributed among all users, leading to higher bills. This situation coincides with recent rate increases approved for major Florida utilities, further affecting consumers.

This summer, consumers are seeing electricity bills surge, and it's not just because they're cranking up the A.C. Rising demand for A.I. is putting a lot of pressure on power grids. That's because these systems are run out of data centers that require a lot of power. At a Senate hearing in July, lawmakers and energy experts warned the current power grid isn't equipped to handle the increasing demand from A.I. Keep in mind, while A.I. data centers use significantly more power, they're connected to the same grid that's used by homes and businesses. That means the cost of the increased power is shared by everyone, which is how it's showing up on your bill. This comes as the Florida Public Service Commission already passed rate hikes for both TECO and Duke Energy customers. Those went into effect earlier this year. I'm consumer investigator Susan L.
