A growing number of AI-generated videos featuring deepfake doctors have been identified on platforms like TikTok and Instagram. These videos, some of which impersonate real physicians, promote products related to beauty, wellness, and weight loss, and have garnered millions of views. Social media companies, including TikTok and Meta, have taken action to remove content flagged as violating their policies, but the trend continues as scammers adapt their tactics.

Experts advise users to watch for signs of deepfakes, such as facial glitches, robotic voices, and exaggerated claims. The rise of these videos raises concerns about public trust in medical information, as people may struggle to distinguish genuine advice from AI-generated misinformation.

AI accounts impersonating doctors on social media

All right, a new type of video is spreading across social media, Dr. Deep Fakes. The physicians in these videos look and sound real, but they're just the latest trend in AI. Our CBS News confirmed team looked into what's behind their rise. Dr. Joel Bervell has a large following on social media. On TikTok and Instagram, he's known as the medical myth buster, debunking false claims for his hundreds of thousands of followers. But this June, Dr. Bervell's followers alerted him to a video on another account. The person in this video looks like him, but it wasn't. It was a deepfake. It looked like me. It didn't sound like me, though. But it was promoting a product that I'd never promoted in the past. Advancements in AI have made it easier for scammers to create fake expert videos. Some use deepfake filters to impersonate real doctors, while others create entirely artificial, but realistic-looking medical experts from scratch. CBS News confirmed found dozens of accounts and more than 100 AI-generated videos on TikTok and Instagram falsely claiming to be actual doctors. Most of the videos promote products related to beauty, wellness, and weight loss, and some of them have millions of views. CBS News reached out to TikTok and Metta, which owns Instagram. Both took actions against videos flagged by CBS News for violating their policies. TikTok, who took down multiple videos, said that between January and March 2025, they removed more than 94% of content that violated their policies on AI-generated content proactively. Metta said it removed videos that violated their advertising standards and took action against videos that violated their health and wellness policies by restricting their access to people over 18. They said they use a variety of different human and technological approaches to identify violating videos, adding that bad actors are quote, constantly evolving their tactics to attempt to evade enforcement. Now, there are some people tracking this growing trend. ESET said there are some things you can watch out for. First, check for glitches and flickering in the face. Those are signs it could be a deepfake. Next, listen closely to the voice. If it sounds robotic and lacks variety, it may be AI. And lastly, keep an eye out for overblown claims. These videos often promote miracle cures or guaranteed results. As with everything, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Dr. Burvell was eventually able to get these deepfakes removed after rallying his supporters to report them. But he says more needs to be done to address the problem. The harm when it comes to AI deepfakes and impersonation, even more broadly, isn't just to the individual like myself having their likeness taken. If someone doesn't know what to believe anymore, if they don't know what actual treatment they should be taking, or whether a specific procedure is safe because there are all these deepfakes putting out different information, that creates a space where it's harder for people to even believe and trust science.
