Among those arrested is Sarah Bireti, a prominent civic leader accused of illegally accessing the National Voters Register, who had previously criticized the election's legitimacy.

Critics claim that the charges against Bireti and the continued detention of federal opposition leader Keza Besije, who faces treason charges, are politically motivated. The refusal to grant bail to opposition figures has led to allegations of targeted legal action against the opposition, with concerns that these actions undermine the credibility of the upcoming election, where musician-turned-politician Bobby Wine is a key challenger.

Tension continues to build in Uganda ahead of next week's general election. Authorities have detained opposition leaders and this woman, a key civic leader, accusing her of illegally obtaining access to the National Voters Register. Before her arrest, Sarah Bireti had called next week's election a sham in an interview. Because the state wants it to be a ritual, but the citizens have made it a real contest. And when you analyze data, districts with the highest voter population are all in favor of opposition and change. The urban centers in Uganda are in favor of change. The demographics, Uganda being one of the youngest countries in the world, are in favor of change and the regime is panicking. Critics say the criminal charges against Bireti are politically motivated. Federal opposition leader Keza Besije also remains in prison on treason charges. He's been in detention since December 2024. They refuse of court to grant bail to opposition activists and leaders, which is a targeted lawfare against opposition in Uganda, including the incarceration of Dr. Keza Besije, a leading opposition figure in Uganda. All these are segments that take away the credibility of the elections. The opposition's main opponent in the upcoming election is the musician-turned-politician popularly known as Bobby Wine.

Iran's army is threatening to join the crackdown on protesters as demonstrations against the regime grow and the death toll mounts. Huge crowds have taken to the streets across the Islamic Republic. Iran's Revolutionary Guard calls them "terrorists." Haley Ott has more details.
