Severe storms swept across the central U.S. on the afternoon of Sept. 16, hitting Nebraska especially hard.

Severe thunderstorms have impacted several states across the central United States, including Iowa, Nebraska, and Colorado. The storms have produced large hail, flash flooding, and prompted multiple severe thunderstorm warnings.

In Nebraska, areas such as Red Willow County experienced significant rainfall leading to flash flood warnings and reports of ponding water. Hail ranging from golf ball to tennis ball size was reported in several locations. The slow-moving nature of the storms has increased the risk of flooding, and authorities have urged residents to remain alert as severe weather continues across the region.

Let's go to Waterloo, Iowa. Live look. This has been a stormy spot on the map here, Anna. Yes, it sure has. This is one of the areas we've been watching a line of thunderstorms move through, definitely causing some trouble. We've seen some severe thunderstorm warnings throughout kind of northern Iowa, but it's not the only place right when we look at radar as a whole. Well, we've had plenty of severe thunderstorm warnings at one point. I listed them on the map. We had at least five states with active severe thunderstorm warnings. Right now, we do still have several states with these warnings in place, but I'm gonna focus in on. We'll start with Iowa in the storm system that we have going on here. So we've seen a couple of cells kind of merge together into more of a line of thunderstorms, but I'll turn the lightning off so that you can see it's really two areas where we have some of these stronger storm systems triggering severe thunderstorm warnings. This one out until 6 30 Central time, this one east of Mason City there into Chickasaw County, Iowa out until 6 30 as well. Now, while I was certainly getting some impacts here from the rain and thunderstorms, the main action has been into Nebraska. So let's go ahead and zoom in there. Give an idea of where things stand. So we talked about McCook. I are McCook Nebraska. Here's where our tornado warning was. We've finally seen the severe thunderstorm warning mostly move out of that area, move a little bit farther to the east. A new one out Red Willow County, Nebraska. So the same county, but a little bit farther to the east. This one out until seven p.m. We do still have the flash flood warning this one until eight p.m. And you can see why when I turn the loop back on here, I'll click off the details of the warning. See the areas in red. This is just over the last hour. It was solidly over McCook planted there for an hour or so. Now we're seeing things move their way to the east, but it is just slow moving. And that's why when I turn on our storm reports, we have at least two flash flood reports. But I said earlier, I'll say it again. Sometimes these take a little bit to show up in our storm reports. It takes a little while for them to be reported to the National Weather Service and then get entered into this database. So it's possible that there's more than just what we're seeing here. But this is at least three inches of ponding in a yard. This one coming in from Red Willow County there. Let's even click on the other ones. There's plenty of hail reports in the area, too. It's not let me click on the other flash flooding report, but it is a similar situation. Plenty of large hail as well. We're seeing, uh, golf ball sized hail, tennis ball sized hail on some of these and more hail is certainly possible. That's not the only area. Let's zoom out a little bit more here because into Colorado there's another severe thunderstorm morning, but we're also starting to see more flash flooding as we go throughout the rest of the evening. Really, all types of severe weather are possible here. So make sure you're staying weather aware throughout the central plains.
