Despite hopes for a truce, the end to the war in Sudan remains out of reach. These displaced residents of al-Fasha have endured years of fighting. They say they're exhausted and wonder if life could return to what it used to be. People have been killed, including the youth, and families have been lost. We have nothing to say other than we just want the country to be fixed, for people to return to their lands and to live in peace and security. Since April 2023, the struggle for power in Sudan has killed tens of thousands of civilians and forced the displacement of some 12 million people, plunging the country into what the UN has called the largest humanitarian crisis in the world. Both the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese army have agreed to various ceasefire proposals during their war, though none have yet prevailed. The latest proposal, put forward by the United States, has been accepted by the RSF, but not yet by Sudan's military-led government. But wary residents say the truce could be a pretext for the RSF to rearm and regain strength. Whether the RSF militia has agreed or not to the ceasefire, they will not stick to it, like what happened in previous agreements. The RSF militia has never respected the ceasefire. With the ceasefire, they want to mobilize more military equipment. They want to prepare themselves again so that they can control al-Fashir and Darfur. The truce proposal comes after the RSF captured the strategic city of al-Fashir in Sudan's Darfur region at the end of last month. Witnesses and aid groups have reported rapes, looting and massacres by RSF fighters, with the fate of thousands more unknown.
