A Sydney man﻿ has been accused of using his position as a childcare worker to produce child abuse material. David William James, 26, has been charged by the Australian Federal Police with 13 offences and remains in custody.

Australian Federal Police have charged 26-year-old David James, an out-of-school care worker, with producing explicit images of 10 boys aged 5 and 6 over a three-year period. The alleged offences occurred at six different after-school care centres in Sydney, where James was employed between 2021 and 2024. 

Authorities began investigating James after an image surfaced on the dark web, leading to a raid on his home and the discovery of child abuse material on his devices. James had worked at nearly 60 childcare centres across Sydney since 2018, and families at the affected centres have been notified. The investigation remains ongoing as police contact other centres where James was employed.

After-school carer charged with producing child abuse material

His job is to care for children, but Australian Federal Police allege 26-year-old out-of-school care worker David James was certainly not doing that. The AFP will allege the man took explicit photos of 10 children aged between 5 and 6 over a three-year period, 2021 to 2024. These children were allegedly in his care at six Ush services where he worked. A suppression order has prevented us revealing his identity until now, but the investigation into David James stretches back more than a year. He once wanted to be a police officer, but didn't pass his probation, then commencing work at after-school care centres. It was one image on the dark web that brought him to the AFP's attention. They raided his home in September 2024, but David James allegedly refused to provide his passcodes. Forensic investigators eventually gained access to his devices, allegedly locating child abuse material. In all, we had to examine 142,000 files on his devices, or 18.9 gigabytes. Not all those were child abuse material, but it shows the effort it took to thoroughly go through every single file. The AFP has identified 10 alleged victims, all boys, aged between 5 and 6. It's alleged David James produced child abuse material of the children at six Ush care centres, but today it's been revealed he worked at almost 60 different childcare centres from 2018 until his arrest last year. Those centres spanning from the Northern Beaches, across the North Shore, to Sydney's CBD, he was employed at centres in the eastern suburbs, including Rose Bay and Maroubra, and in the west, in Bankstown. Some of the centres he might have worked one shift, and some of the centres he might have worked a lot of shifts. The six centres where the alleged offending took place, and families who may have interacted with David James, have already been notified. The remaining 52 services who at some point had David James on their books, are finding out of his arrest today. Samara Gardner, 10 News.
