The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam was inaugurated in the presence of several African heads of state and government, who praised the project as transformative for Ethiopia and the region. Leaders from countries including Kenya and South Sudan announced plans to import electricity from Ethiopia to strengthen their national energy grids. 

The dam, which cost nearly $5 billion and is situated on a tributary of the Nile near Sudan, is expected to generate over 5,000 megawatts and double Ethiopia's electricity output. The project is being hailed as a symbol of African-led infrastructure development and aligns with the African Union's vision for continental energy connectivity.

African leaders eye power imports from Ethiopia

Various leaders who attended the inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam held the project as life-changing in the Eastern African country. Dozens of visiting African heads of state and government joined Abiy Ahmed for the inauguration, with many expressing interest in importing power from Ethiopia. Countries like Kenya have now promised to import electricity from Ethiopia to boost its national grid capacity. The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is not merely a national project. It is a Pan-African statement. It exemplifies the scale and ambition of African-led infrastructure and aligns with Africa's, Africa Union's vision of continental energy connectivity. Somalia's President Mohamed also held the project. We understand that water resources adjust life differently in each country. For some, it's about survival and water security. For others, it's about energy and growth. All these perspectives are valid. Also in attendance was South Sudan's President Salva Kiiru, who also promised to import electricity from Ethiopia to boost his country's energy capacity. I am also pleased to announce that South Sudan is looking forward to signing an agreement to receive power from the dam. The almost $5 billion mega-dam, located on a tributary of the River Nile in the northwest of the country near the border with Sudan, will produce more than 5,000 megawatts and is expected to double national electricity generation capacity, according to officials.
