They’ve triggered fears of more deaths and destruction in a region ravaged by Sunday's earthquake. The death toll has passed 2,200.

Many homes have been destroyed, and hundreds of bodies have been recovered, with many more believed to be trapped under rubble. Survivors recount the loss of multiple family members and the challenges faced as they await aid.

Relief efforts have been slowed by rough terrain, landslides, and rockfalls, with the Taliban government deploying helicopters and commandos to reach affected areas. Aid organisations have begun to arrive, but funding cuts and destroyed infrastructure continue to hinder the delivery of essential supplies such as food and shelter.

Afghanistan aftershocks: Families await help in remote villages

There's silence and sorrow in this remote village in Afghanistan's Kunar province. Roofs have caved in, homes reduced to heaps of stone and dust. The region was the epicentre of an earthquake on Sunday, one of the worst the country has witnessed in decades. 83-year-old Abdul Saad survived the initial quake and the multiple aftershocks that followed, but lost five members of his family. Dust filled the air, everything went dark and I could not understand what was happening. I rushed towards the door to open it, but I couldn't because it was stuck. I tried to find my family and I saw the roof had collapsed and my family was buried under it. Hundreds of bodies have been recovered, but many remain under the rubble. Almost every family in this mountainous region is grieving. My brother is dead, my sister-in-law is dead, two of my nephews are dead, I've lost almost all my family. It's only me, my elderly father and my little niece who are left. In another village in Noorgal district, help has finally arrived. The rough terrain has hampered relief efforts. The Taliban government deployed helicopters and airdropped commandos to reach the survivors. We were in a very bad state, we had nowhere to sleep and no food. We are very happy that these aid organisations helped us and we are asking the international community for more help. The World Health Organisation says landslides and rockfalls have destroyed roads, slowing relief missions. Funding cuts have also impacted the response. For Abdul Saad and many families, it's already too late. While others wait for the most basic supplies, food and shelter, before night falls. Umkoosum Sharif, Al Jazeera.
