Survivors of an earthquake that hit Afghanistan’s mountainous eastern province of Kunar grappled with devastating loss on Wednesday (September 3) after the disaster killed more than 1,400 people and crumbled thousands of homes.

The disaster has destroyed thousands of homes in Kunar and Nangarhar provinces, leaving many survivors with nothing but the clothes they were wearing. Rescue efforts have been severely hampered by harsh weather and difficult terrain, and a subsequent quake further disrupted operations by causing landslides and cutting off access to remote villages. 

Most survivors remain stranded, mourning their losses and facing significant hardships. Afghanistan, already grappling with poverty, conflict, and reduced international aid, has experienced several devastating earthquakes in recent years, compounding the challenges faced by its population.

The death toll from an earthquake that struck Afghanistan two days ago has topped 1,400, according to the Taliban administration, and harsh weather and rugged terrain have hampered rescue work. Alam Jaan is a survivor here in Kunar province. Everything we had has been destroyed. Our house collapsed, and all our belongings and possessions were lost. The only remaining thing left for us are these clothes on our backs. This is the condition you see us in, and we are facing many difficulties. The magnitude 6 quake, one of Afghanistan's deadliest in recent years, crumbled thousands of homes in the provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar around midnight on Sunday. A second quake of magnitude 5.5 on Tuesday evening caused panic and interrupted rescue efforts, as it sent rocks sliding down mountains and cut off roads to villages in remote areas. Most survivors remain stranded among the ruins, burying their dead in graveyards, filling with freshly dug plots for children and adults. Hemmed in by mountains, Afghanistan is no stranger to such devastation. A quake in 2022 killed about 1,000 people, and successive shocks in 2023 flattened villages in Herat. Each new disaster strikes a nation of more than 40 million, crippled by poverty, war and shrinking aid, with the United Nations estimating that half needed assistance even before Sunday's quake.
