From the beginning, Dick Van Dyke had perfect timing. Once a local radio DJ, he burst onto the national scene in the 1950s as the new medium of television was looking for new faces. And for a time, Walter Cronkite's co-host on the CBS Morning News. In 1960, Broadway called. Dick Van Dyke won a Tony Award for Bye Bye Birdie, later reprising his role on the big screen. Van Dyke returned to television in 1961 when producer Paul Reiner cast him to play a fictionalized version of himself, comedy writer Rob Petrie in a CBS sitcom. Not in front of the D-U-C-K. The Dick Van Dyke Show got off to a slow start, but it found an audience in summer reruns and became a ratings hit over the series' five-season run. Van Dyke won three Emmys as Outstanding Actor. In the 1970s, there were rough spots, including real-life struggles with alcohol, but he remained in front of the camera and in our living rooms with variety shows, guest appearances and another hit series, this time a drama. Van Dyke was honored at the Kennedy Center in 2021, and the following year, at age 97, he won another Emmy for a guest spot on the daytime soap Days of Our Lives.
