Famous for its appearances in films and television, including 'The Blues Brothers' and 'Prison Break,' the site now allows visitors to explore areas such as the warden's office and living quarters. The prison, with its distinctive architecture and rich history, has become a place where the stories of its past are shared with the public.

A rare look at Old Joliet Prison

We end this evening with a rare look inside a notorious Illinois prison. And tonight's Weekend Journal, Noel Brennan of CBS Chicago shows us while the inmates are gone, their stories are coming to life. These days, visits are voluntary. But that's not the way it used to be at the old Joliet prison in Joliet, Illinois. The prison building was designed really to kind of scare the heck out of not only the people inside of it, but the people outside of it. Greg Pierbolt, CEO of the Joliet Area Historical Museum, holds keys to history at the prison. Built in the 1850s, it housed inmates until 2002. You have 40 cells along each gallery here for a total of 640 cells. A prison made famous by two brothers who were on a mission from God. Pop culture references to the prison, the obvious ones are certainly the Blues Brothers, which was filmed here when it was a live maximum security prison. You have Prison Break, which is now making the rounds again on streaming, that was filmed here in 2005. Most of the more than 16-acre property has been opened to tours. The warden's office here. Except for the part of the prison that used to be palatial. The prison was a castle and the warden was the king. So not only did the warden work here, the warden lived here. Thanks to more than $10 million in state and federal grants, tour groups can now see what it was like to be warden. When you're walking through here, how do you feel? What are you thinking about when you're going through these different rooms? You feel sadness, you feel this was the end of the line for some people. A prison immortalized in pop culture is now more accessible than ever. A living room, if you will, for the warden and his family. There are no inmates anymore, just history behind bars.
