As of the end of September, the 2025 hurricane season has set a bizarre mix of records for both its quietude and its strength.

The 2025 Atlantic hurricane season has been notable for several record-breaking and unusual events. Hurricane Aaron rapidly intensified to a category five, making it the strongest storm of the season so far. This year is the first since 1935 where the first three hurricanes all reached major status, defined as category three or higher. The season also featured a record-tying lull in activity during the typical peak, followed by the most active late September period on record. Hurricanes Umberto and Imelda were the closest in proximity in nearly 60 years. Despite no hurricanes making landfall in the United States so far, experts warn that the season is not over, and more storms could develop in the coming weeks.

A look at the strange, record-breaking hurricane season so far

Welcome back to AccuWeather Ahead. We have seen a wild 2025 hurricane season so far in the Atlantic. Hurricane Aaron was our strongest that rapidly intensified in the Atlantic to a major category five storm. 2025 is also the first season since 1935, the first in 90 years, where the first three hurricanes reached major status. That's a category three or stronger. And then 2025 had a record-tying stretch of inactivity during the climatological peak actually of the season. And this record-tying lull inactivity has been followed up by the most active late September stretch in history. It's tied for that. Also hurricanes Umberto and Imelda are the closest hurricanes in physical proximity to each other in nearly 60 years. And we have also not seen a landfalling hurricane in the USS season, but six in the last 10 years, we have had at least one landfalling hurricane after September 30th, but don't let your guard down just yet because as we head throughout October, yes, we are past the climatological peak of hurricane and named storm season, but look at this. We're still in a very active time here as we head throughout early to mid, even late parts of October. We're still going to be watching out for an elevated number of named storms, even hurricanes possible, but looking at what we've had so far, once again, Aaron was a storm so far, the biggest storm we've had that this season got up to a category five. We've also seen some impacts to the U S Chantal right there was the one where we did have the biggest impacts as far as any impacts there on land.
