A 68-year-old man has died following a building collapse at a Family Dollar store in midtown Kansas City. Three others were injured, including a 50-year-old woman who is in critical condition. Emergency services responded to the incident and transported the injured to medical facilities, while two others declined treatment. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the collapse, and the Kansas City Police Department is conducting an investigation. Residents and officials have raised concerns about the structural integrity of the building, but no prior warnings or reports about the structure have been confirmed. The public is being advised to stay away from the area as the investigation and cleanup continue.

Good evening, I'm Melissa Jackson and we start with breaking news tonight. A person is dead and three others are injured after a building collapsed at a family dollar in midtown. This happened around 2 45 this afternoon and we want to get straight out to Ryan Gamboa right now. Ryan, this is such a traumatic scene. I'm sure for so many people out there. Can you tell us the latest of what you know? Because I know we just got an update from KCFD. Absolutely. I know we got a little bit of an update here. We know that one person has died at the family dollar just south of Valentine here on Broadway. Now, um, 2 45. We just got a call is when KCFD got the call out here. One person was transported to K. U. Med center with significant injuries and two of those other, uh, those that were injured also, um, were denied treatment, but we're also injured in this. And like we said, there's that one fatality, but some of that cleanup is still happening right here. I'll take a step out so you can see behind me. Police, um, and fire department have actually left the scene since we've been here this afternoon. Um, we were first on the scene this afternoon and, um, you can see that. Take a look. Some of this video that we got from our photojournalist Brian, who was out here. It's been utter chaos for these neighbors and residents in the area right now. Um, and and so as we continue to learn more, um, this is just it is truly a tragedy for a lot of these people. But let me let me throw back to a press conference that we heard from K. C. F. D. Battalion chief Michael Hopkins about what we know about the victim. It's an unfortunately today we do have one fatality. That fatality is a male individual individual african american age unknown at this time. Currently, the Kansas City Police Department is in route with their investigative team. They will be taking over the investigation due to the fatality. Mhm. Well, right now, what we know is that the 68 year old man male was the victim who passed away in this incident. Now, the patient that was transported was a 50 year old female. Her condition has been updated to critical due to the injuries that she sustained in this. And there's a lot of family and residents that live within this neighborhood here. A lot of them spoke with, um, the partner of the man who passed away, who tells me that she doesn't really know what to do right now because she's a little bit all on her own. So this is this is a fluent situation. We're continuing to learn more details. Um, but right now, a lot of people are just questioning the structural integrity of this building. So, um, Alyssa, understandably questioning the structure and its integrity. And that's what I wanted to ask you about, Ryan, because we know stuff like this does not just happen. There has to be a reason buildings don't just collapse. Has KCFD said anything to you about any reports they've received any dangerous reports about the risk of the building? Anything that they know about this structure from before today? Uh, nothing that they were able to tell us before today about this building in particular, they'd have to go back through some records. They told us now one thing they are advising is that people stay out of the area. And when this area does open up, which they don't have a time frame right now to stay away from it, that this is this is a dangerous structure now. So again, like I said, there's a lot of fluidity in this situation. We're gonna continue to look into the structural integrity. Some neighbors told me that they saw the sign dangling just before all of this. So we'll continue to answer those questions as we learn more and as more becomes available live in Kansas City.
