NASA has announced that 2025 tied with 2023 as the second-hottest year on record, based on temperature data that extends back to the 1850s. This finding is consistent with several international reports and highlights a continued upward trend in global temperatures.

The report comes as the U.S. government loosens environmental regulations and reduces funding for agencies like NOAA and the National Weather Service, raising concerns about future data collection and analysis. While basic temperature data remains accessible, experts note that more complex climate analysis may be affected by these policy and budget changes.

2025 ties for second-hottest year on record, NASA says

Some new climate data is out showing 2025 was scorchingly hot. NASA has confirmed that it is tied for the second hottest year on record. So joining us to break it down and what it means for us and the planet is our national environmental correspondent David Schechter. So David, several international reports have come out in the last few days about another record hot year this year. And when we say it's the hottest on record or the second hottest on record, how far back are we looking? Well, we have climate records and temperature records that go well beyond 1970 and some records go back into, you know, the 1850s. So we're looking at, you know, long series of time on these records. They go, they go way back. And when you, when you think about, you know, what we're hearing now and people talk about, well, is this a milestone? It's really a continuation of the data that we've been getting over the years. 2025 was tied with 2023 as according to NASA as the second hottest year ever. And 2025 was the hottest year on record. So we're getting these numbers at the tail end of all that data you asked about Vlad, it's getting higher and higher and higher. So David, the U.S. is obviously one of the biggest emitters in the world. And this is coming as the Trump administration is loosening environmental regulations in what it says is an effort to boost business. Are we already seeing an impact of those changes? I would say that those changes will take some time to be baked into kind of the scientific data that that scientists pull out of the atmosphere, you know, releasing of carbon into the atmosphere and measuring that. So, but as soon as those, as soon as, you know, you turn a coal plant back on or, you know, you reduce the amount of emphasis on renewable energy, it does have an impact on the amount of CO2 that goes into the atmosphere. CO2 is what they call greenhouse gas, which helps warm up the planet. So the United States over time has sort of been bending the curve on reducing its CO2 emissions and is heading in that direction. But the policies of the Trump administration are to emphasize burning of fossil fuels. And so I think there are some predictions that that bending will slow or start to move in the other direction. And David, we know that the administration has cut a lot of jobs at NOAA and the National Weather Service. Do we have any sense of whether or not those job cuts affect some of this data or just the government's ability to collect data moving forward? Well, I think this particular temperature data, it comes from so many weather stations around the country and it's publicly available data. It's not, this, the data itself is not some of the more difficult data to extract. But just looking at the way these services have been impacted by budget cuts and job cuts, we definitely will see changes in our ability to look at kind of complex data about the climate. And I will just say today NOAA released this information. I'm looking at their website right now. It says NOAA releases global temperature data. It doesn't say anything about what that data means. In fact, I had to spend a couple of minutes just looking at it to say, well, what are they saying about 2025? I didn't even understand it. When you look at European information from their sort of sister group called Copernicus, it's like, we just had our second or third hottest year in a row and here's what that means. So definitely we're getting no analysis or no context from the data that NASA has just released. We had to do that ourselves. Thank you, David. And a last question. Is that your home? It's beautiful.
